The Grand Barzani Mosque Project was envisioned by His Excellency Masrour
Barzani in 2023 and has been developed under his direct supervision through
the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs, with the design entrusted to Mr. Goran Rashid Fatah founder of GRAF Architecture and the head of the local design team
Spanning more than 2 million square meters, the project is recognized as the
largest mosque development in the world by total site area and ranks third
globally in worshipper capacity. Its architectural vision draws inspiration from
Kurdish identity, the natural beauty of Kurdistan, and the enduring legacy of the
late Mustafa Barzani, while reviving the richness of traditional Kurdish
architecture in a contemporary form.
The complex features a 64-meter-diameter main dome, four minarets rising 76
meters high—symbolizing the age of the late Mustafa Barzani—and a
monumental 21-meter-high entrance gate that stands among the tallest
mosque entrances in the world.
The development includes a main prayer hall accommodating 9,000
worshippers, outdoor courtyards and gardens capable of hosting more than
700,000 people, halls for religious and social events, a library, museum, religious
school, conference center, the largest archive of Kurdish and religious
manuscripts, as well as one of the world's largest artificial waterfalls, lakes, and
landscaped parks.
More than a place of worship, the Grand Barzani Mosque stands as a lasting
symbol of faith, identity, knowledge, and the grandeur of Kurdistan
